Celtic are 20-something games away from going 2 full seasons without a domestic loss, and despite proving invincible and unbeatable to local rivals, former Rangers striker Kris Boyd doesn’t believe they are untouchable.
The Light Blues are very close to appointing Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes as their new manager, and the general consensus is that he is capable of leading them to greater heights following recent mediocre years.
Boyd is of the opinion that the former Rangers player wouldn’t need a complete squad overhaul to compete with Celtic once he’s appointed.
Rather, some 5 to 6 quality additions would be enough to do the trick, although he agrees catching up with the Hoops will take some time.
Boyd wrote in his The Scottish Sun column: “Sure, Celtic are a good way in front but I don’t buy the idea they are untouchable.
“It doesn’t need to be a complete overhaul at Ibrox.
“They don’t need to sign a dozen new players to close the gap — five or six could be enough.
“It will still take a bit of time and there has to be realistic targets.
“Nothing is going to happen overnight, but Rangers can cement their position as the second-best team in the country first and take things from there.”
Erstwhile Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha oversaw a complete overhaul during the summer, recruiting 11 players.
However, it didn’t yield much as they fell to 4th place after a poor start to the campaign before recent change of fortunes under interim boss Graeme Murty saw them move to 2nd.
Indeed, a few topnotch additions to the squad should get Rangers challenging for silverware again, as opposed to heavily recruiting players of average quality.
