Former Tottenham striker Teddy Sheringham has said that the clubs success in the Champions League this season is due to the experience that they gained from participating in the competition last term.

Spurs recorded surprise victories over Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this season to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition as group winners.

English clubs have generally struggled in the competition recently and the last time that a club from England won the competition was in 2012 when Chelsea led by Roberto Di Mateo prevailed.

Tottenham were poor last season as they finished third in their group which featured the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco and CSKA Moscow.

Speaking to the Mirror, Sheringham said, “Tottenham drew away with Real Madrid and beat them at home. Not bad, is it?

“They now have a year’s experience in the Champions League and that is showing. They look more accomplished this season and they have match-winners like Dele Alli and Harry Kane.”
