Peter Reid hands Everton timely advice regarding Ross Barkley

Everton club legend Peter Reid believes that the Toffees did the right thing by trying to offload midfielder Ross Barkley during the summer transfer window. However he did add that the club should now focus on getting the 23-year-old back on the field.

“If he’s not going to sign a new deal, you’ve got to [try and sell him],” Reid told Tribalfootball.

“He’s coming to end of his contract, if he turned down the Everton offer, in modern football, that means he wants to go. The Chelsea deal fell through, his injured at the moment, but the best thing for everyone, for Ross and for Everton, is to get him on the football pitch.”

Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman tried to sell Barkley during the summer transfer window after he refused to sign a new contract. He came close to joining Chelsea on deadline day after the two clubs agreed a deal of £35 million.

Everton majority shareholder FarhadMoshiri said that Barkley had undergone a medical with the reigning Premier League Champions before deciding against a move.

Barkley however denied this and said that his injury problems were the reason that he withdrew from a deal.
