Crystal Palace manager says this player should still be playing for England

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson believes that Everton midfielder Wayne Rooney should still be playing for the England national team.

Former Three Lions skipper Rooney called time on his international career in August in order to focus on his club football.

Many were surprised by the decision as he is 31 years old and could perhaps have one more World Cup left in him. Rooney is the all-time record goal scorer for England and boasts 53 goals from 119 games.

He was a key part of the team while Hodgson was manager and went on to make 42 appearances for the nation under the current Palace boss.

Speaking about Rooney ahead of his side’s clash against Everton on Saturday, Hodgson said: “Of course I am worried about the threat he poses.

“Wayne’s a top-class player, there’s no question about that. His goal record and his appearance record and his achievements, they speak for themselves. He is one of the greatest players I have ever coached.”

“I was a little surprise when he retired, I must admit. He knows that because I’ve spoken to him via. I thought he would try and continue to get to the next World Cup, but these are the decisions players have to make.

“But one thing I do know is England owes him, he owes England nothing, because he gave is all for England and did more than his fair share of what someone could expect for England.”
