This Tuesday, November 14, 2017 (11:45 AM Pacific) the Republic of Ireland will host Denmark at the Aviva Stadium for the second leg of a UEFA World Cup qualifier play-off. The first leg ended in a deadlock as the Danish Dynamite and The Green Army had a scoreless draw in Denmark.
The Republic of Ireland only had 28-percent possession in the first leg but did test Kasper Schmeichel throughout the game. Irish goalkeeper Darren Randolph also had a solid performance and the defense was on point for Martin O’Neill especially players like Cyrus Christie and Shane Duffy. Striker Darryl Murphy was not effective up front and Shane Long looked to be the better player coming off the bench.
Martin O’Neill may consider starting the Southampton forward over Darryl Murphy in this game as Long looked to be much more dangerous in his limited playing time. The Boys in Green will count with the home support in Dublin and that could prove to be the deciding factor in this decisive match but Denmark will surely prove to be a worthy adversary.
Denmark seemed to be the better team in the first leg as it did have much more of the possession with 14 total shots as well. However, only five of the shots were on target and Darren Randolph got to all of Dane’s scoring opportunities. The defense was very solid for Åge Hareide but Christian Eriksen was the clear standout in that first leg. The Spurs’ midfielder had 40 passes, an 83-percent pass accuracy, two shots on target and three out of four successful dribble attempts.
Nicolai Jorgensen and Andreas Cornelius were not very effective up front and Åge Hareide may want to give a player like Yussuf Poulsen or Viktor Fisher a start in this second leg. This game will be very tough especially away from home, for the Nordic side but a similar performance to that of the first leg could be enough for the win in this match.
