This Friday, November 10, 2017 (2:00 PM Pacific) Honduras will host Australia at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano for the first leg of an inter-confederation play-off matchup. Both teams had respectable performances in the qualifying stages of their respective regions and should present a hard-fought matchup.
Honduras finished fourth in the hexagonal stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying ahead of the United States and Trinidad and Tobago. Los Catrachos gave Mexico its only loss in the qualifiers to get to this play-off game by defeating El Tri 3-2 at home in the final matchday of CONCACAF world cup qualifying.
There are not many notable names on Jorge Luis Pinto’s squad as most of the team plays in Honduras and in the MLS. Some of the more talented players on the squad include Boniek Garcia, Romell Quioto and Alberth Ellis, who all play for MLS team Houston Dynamo. Honduras is not the best team but the home-field advantage is one of its best assets and it could prove to be the difference maker in this first leg.
Australia finished third in Group B of the AFC qualifiers with 19 points and defeated Syria in a play-off matchup to get to this game. The Socceroos do have a talented squad but will have several absences for this first leg including Mark Milligan, Mat Leckie, Robbie Kruse and Tim Cahill.
The offense will be particularly weakened in this first leg which could be a huge blow to the team, especially away from home. The game should prove to be a very entertaining and intense encounter and it is very unclear which team will finish on top.
