Aston Villa plotting a huge swoop for Premier League star

Aston Villa have been linked with an ambitious attempt to sign Manchester United veteran Michael Carrick. The 36 year old appears to not be part of Jose Mourinho’s plans for this season and has so far only started one game which came during a Carabao Cup win over Burton Albion.

This situation has alerted clubs including Villa, Leicester City and West Brom according to The Mirror. The report added that Carrick is desperate for more minutes and is frustrated at the current situation, though he is not thinking about leaving United.

Given his age as well as the fact that he has fallen down the clubs pecking order behind the likes of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Maroune Fellaini, it will be very difficult to see Carrick returning to the United first team fold on a regular basis.

Speaking about the situation, Mourinho said: “We gave him a contract because we think he is a good player, an important player. He is just in a team where I think in this moment Matic and Fellaini are in the best form that I have ever seen them.

“I never saw Matic or Fellaini play so well, so he is in a team with these two guys playing absolutely phenomenal. So for Carrick it’s just patience because that time will arrive. That’s a team, that’s a squad, we can only play with 11 guys.”
