Both teams are not living amazing moments in the Liga MX but that does not take anything away from this Clasico Tapatio and the magnitude of the encounter.
Chivas of Guadalajara has been by far the most disappointing team in the Liga MX coming from a championship season and now in 15th place with 12 points. Los Rojiblancos finished second in Group 7 of the Copa MX to reach this round of 16 and will look to repeat as Copa MX champions. With no chance at making the playoffs in the Liga MX, Matias Almeyda is likely to use a strong squad to try and surpass this solid Atlas’ side.
Players like Rodolfo Pizarro and Orbelin Pineda have been massively under-performing while Alan Pulido has suffered injury problems throughout the season that has kept him off the pitch. Matias Almeyda’s men put in a very good performance in the Clasico Nacional against Club America and should put in an equally good performance in this Guadalajara Derby.
It has been a season of highs and lows for Atlas, with fans at times throughout the year even asking for the departure of manager Jose Guadalupe Cruz. Los Rojinegros have been turning it around lately now in ninth place with 19 points and are in the contested fight for a playoff place.
Los Zorros finished second in Group 3 of the Copa MX with nine points, just behind Club America on goal differential. Jose Cruz does count with some exciting players on his squad like Ravel Morrison, Milton Caraglio and Matias Alustiza but this will be a close game between archrivals.
