England manager Gareth Southgate admitted last week the reason he is yet to hand a national team invitation to Celtic winger Scott Sinclair is because there is enough firing power in the attacking department.
While he didn’t fail to recognize the potential of the former Manchester City forward, the Three Lions boss claimed he was a step below the required level, and that appears to have now inspired the Hoops star.
Sinclair wants to force himself into the England squad reckoning ahead of Russia 2018 World Cup, and he believes only a top performance on continental level will make that happen.
The 28-year-old has scored 24 league goals since the start of last term, but just once in the Champions League, and the little competition available in the SPFL clearly counts against his prolific form in the eyes of Southgate.
Sinclair, though, remains optimistic that a lack of lethal left-midfielders in the English squad could pave way for him, and is looking forward to impressing the manager with his Champions League performances.
He told The Sun of his national team call-up hopes: “I haven’t given up on it yet. It comes down to the European stage.
“All I can do is as well as I can in the Champions League for Celtic. I’d say it’s the only platform to impress.”
Celtic face Bayern Munich in back to back Champions League fixtures next, and Sinclair will hope to be in his best form as his World Cup hopes could be determined over those 180 minutes.
