Southampton star backs Tottenham man for huge responsibility

Harry Kane

According to reports, Ryan Bertrand has backed Tottenham star Harry Kane to be appointed as permanent captain of the England national team.

The Three lions have been without a permanent captain since Wayne Rooney announced his retirement from international football last month.

Since taking charge of the team, manager Gareth Southgate has opted to rotate the armband with Gary Cahill, Jordan Henderson and Kane all having had the opportunity to captain the side.

Though Southgate has yet to appoint a permanent captain, he will likely have to do so before the 2018 World Cup. Henderson and Cahill could have an advantage in the race to the armband as they have experience captaining on a regular basis at club level while Kane does not.

Bertrand has however given his backing to Kane to win the race to the armband and said, “[The captaincy] is completely down to the manager. ‘H’ [Harry Kane] gets my vote.

“He is in great form. Him coming to the England camp in such fine form is a massive boost for the whole squad.

“What we are blessed with is we have a lot of leaders in the camp now and whoever is tasked with that duty on the night is deserving of that.”
