Rangers spent £8million recruiting 8 new players during the summer transfer window, but things haven’t been exactly rosy under manager Pedro Caixinha thus far.
The squad overhauling the Portuguese went about is yet to yield the expected impact, and calls from some quarters are already demanding he’s shown the exit door following an underwhelming start to the Premiership campaign for Rangers.
However, Celtic legend Davie Provan believes such calls are premature.
In his Scottish Sun column, the 1980 Scottish PFA Player of the Year claims the Gers would have to spend 10 times their summer transfer outlay in order to have a chance of indeed challenging for the Premiership prize.
As per Provan: “If Caixinha’s arrival was straight out of left field, some of the criticism of him has been brainless. His £8million summer spend has been used as a rod for his back.
“That money might get you an average full-back in the English Championship. Rangers would have needed £80m to give Celtic a run for their money.”
Considering the gulf in quality between both Old Firm sides, Rangers clearly need to make big signings to have a chance of stiffly competing at their rivals’ level, and they are definitely unable to flex the Celtic-type of financial muscle right now.
Caixinha and his charges definitely will keep on fighting, but without the badly needed quality, there is little they can do in terms of realizing the club’s lofty ambitions.
Rangers are likely to also spend much in the winter market, but it remains to be seen if that will be good enough to unsettle Celtic at the top of the league.
