Chelsea legend questions the quality of Tottenham signing

Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins has revealed that while he was happy with the way that Serge Aurier played during his debut for Tottenham in the Champions League on Wednesday, he found that the player looked less convincing defensively.

Wilkins revealed that he felt that while the player looked confident going forward, his defensive strength was questionable by saying, “Aurier, last night, was brilliant going forward.

“But he had the most fantastic battle with [Christian] Pulisic from Dortmund. Up and back and they were fighting each other either way, and I thought it was a great little personal battle.

“But he looked as if he might be a little bit suspect defensively, [and] didn’t get back on the back post half as quick as he should have done.”

Mauricio Pochettino’s side kicked off their Champions League group stage with a convincing 3-1 victory over Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund, where Aurier played a prominent role.

Aurier is a world class player as he showed during his time with PSG. While Wilkins is entitled to pass criticism, his words can be considered a little harsh as the midweek game was only the Ivorian’s first game for the club and it may take him a few more matches to get adjusted to life in North London.
