How Aston Villa fared during the set of International matches

Despite making a slow start to the season, a number of Aston Villa played were called up by their nations for FIFA World Cup qualifying. Here’s how they did:

Glenn Whelan

Started and played 79 minutes in their 1-1 draw away to Georgia on Saturday. He was sacrificed as they went for a winning goal and a point.

Ahmed Elmohomady

The Egyptian was an unused sub as his side fell to a 1-0 loss away to Uganda to cede top spot in the group to their rivals.

Birkir Bjarnason

The Iceland man played all 90 minutes for his country as they fell to struggling Finland 1-0 in Tampere on Saturday.

Conor Hourihane

After starting his season well in the Championship, midfielder Conor Hourihane got the call up. However, he did not feature in their 1-1 draw at Georgia.

Neil Taylor

The left back didn’t even make the bench for Wales’ 1-0 win at home to Austria on Saturday.

Robert Snodgrass

The winger wasn’t picked for the match day squad as his Scotland team on 0-3 at Lithuania on Friday.

James Chester

The Welsh center back played all 90 minutes of his side’s 1-0 win at home to Austria on Saturday. In addition to keeping a clean sheet, he picked up a yellow card.
