Whilst England were preparing for their first match after Wayne Rooney announced his international retirement, the Everton man was getting arrested while on his way home, for driving under the influence after clubbing.
The 31-year-old Toffees forward was stopped by police in the wee hours of Friday morning in a black Volkswagen Beetle in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
Rooney was released on bail at dawn as his agent Paul Stretford came to his rescue, and later drove him home from the Middlewich custody suite in which he was detained.
The former Red Devils and England’s highest goalscorer of all time is due to appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on September 18, just a day after he returns to Old Trafford with Everton on Premier League’s matchday 5.
Social media network Twitter of course had a field day, tearing into Rooney and Everton for the unfortunate mishap. Here are some of the reactions.

Fail to sign a striker or a defender. Barkley & Niasse sales fall through. Connolly leaves. Rooney arrested. A proper Everton deadline day.

I see Wayne Rooney has been arrested for drink driving. The lengths Everton players go to to get three points is unbelievable? #Rooney
