West Ham reportedly fail to land European champion due to this reason

According to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, Barcelona midfielder and West Ham target Andre Gomes won’t be leaving Camp Nou for the Premier League this summer.

On Thursday morning, it had appeared that the out-of-favour Portugal international was off on loan and had chosen Tottenham over the Hammers.

However, a move fell through most probably because the Catalans couldn’t find a replacement, despite still having until 11.59pm on Friday before the Spanish summer transfer window slams shut.

West Ham had Gomes’ fellow Euros 2016 winning teammate William Carvalho as their top midfield target all summer, but they couldn’t agree a fee with Sporting Lisbon, and last-minutes replacements were being sorted.

A loan for Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere was reportedly mulled over as per The Sun, and it seems West Ham also considered the Barcelona and former Valencia man.

In the end, no deadline day signing was made by the east London club, and manager Slaven Bilic is now left to make do with his current squad until at least January.

Having had a torrid time at Barcelona, though, it remains to be seen if Gomes would have hit the ground running at the London Stadium had a deal worked out.
