Liverpool were reportedly inches away from securing a deal for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk before their illegal approach ruined their chances.
With a deal still being discussed for the Netherlands international hours before the summer window shuts, Liverpool are all but wrapping up one for former Saints player Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The England international is set to become Liverpool’s 4th summer arrival, but he too was tapped up by the Reds some decade ago, or so it seems.
Reds defensive legend turned pundit Jamie Carragher revealed on his twitter account: “Tried to persuade AOC (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain) to join @LFC when he was a kid, obviously Klopp is more persuasive!..”
Carragher’s fellow Sky Sport pundits Matt Le Tissier quickly retorted: “More illegal tapping up”
Le Tissier, a Southampton legend has slammed Liverpool all summer over their chase of van Dijk, and he wasn’t going to let another opportunity to hit at the Reds slide.
Oxlade-Chamberlain spent 2 seasons with the Saints, who were then in the League One, before completing a £12million move to Arsenal in the summer of 2011.
The winger has since failed to leave up to initial expectations, scoring a paltry 9 goals in 13 league appearances for the Gunners.
That didn’t stop Reds boss Jurgen Klopp from going all out for his man, though, and all eyes would now be on the versatile 24-year-old who’s expected to finally fulfil his potential at Anfield under the German.
