According to the Daily Star, West Ham could lose winter signing Jose Fonte to Crystal Palace, with under-fire Eagles manager Frank de Boer keen on adding the Portugal international to his squad in order to save his 2-month EPL managerial career.
Palace, like West Ham are winless in the new campaign under their new manager, shipping 6 goals and yet to score.
De Boer wants a Selhurst Park return for Fonte, and having struggled since signing an £8million two-and-a-half-year deal for the Hammers in January, the 33-year-old could be more than willing to move on.
Since arriving West Ham, Fonte has been a shadow of his former self, and was far from impressive during his only league appearance of the current campaign – a 3-2 loss to Southampton upper weekend.
Manager Slaven Bilic’s men have leaked 10 goals in their opening 3 league games of the season, yet it doesn’t seem the club would hesitate to cash in on Fonte, in order to bring more capable additions to the backline.
The Hammers are better off getting another centre-back before deadline day, with Fonte most likely well beyond his best footballing years.
A sale to Palace should be welcome, and maybe perhaps, Reece Oxford shouldn’t have been loaned out to Borussia Monchengladbach earlier this summer in the first place.
