The Sun’s Neil Custis says Rooney is not one of the best England players

Neil Custis has claimed that Wayne Rooney is not up there with the best players in England.

Rooney is the all-time leading goal scorer for the England national team and Manchester United and is widely regarded as a legend of the modern era as well as of the England national team.

He starred for the three Lions as a youngster during Euro 2004 but failed to deliver at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups as he was hampered by injury but his contributions to England cannot be doubted.

Despite the achievements which the 31-year-old Rooney has garnered over the years, Custis believes that he is not in the same category as the likes of David Platt, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer.

He said, “Is he up there with the very best? No, because in the major tournaments he didn’t do it, he didn’t stand out.

“Had he not had his foot stamped on at Euro 2004 against Portugal, I think we could have gone on to win it, because he really did make an impact in that one. But since then he just hasn’t made the impact, and hasn’t done what Wayne Rooney can do.”
