Celtic have been drawn in group B of this season’s Champions League, and they will come up against Bayern Munich, PSG and Anderlecht as they hope to advance to the next stage or at least secure an entry to the Europa League round of 32.
Based off on current form and squad strength, the Belgian giants are the Hoops’ only equals and match.
While they would hope to finish 3rd in the group ahead of last season’s UEFA Europa League quarterfinalists, Celtic have a threat to neutralize in former striking target Henry Onyekuru.
Hoops assistant manager Chris Davies revealed how the Scottish Premiership giants registered strong interest in the Nigeria international last January.
However, a move failed and Everton signed him for £8million from Eupen this summer, only to quickly loan him back to the Belgian league.
Davies told the Scottish Sun, “I know about Onyekuru. I’ve seen him play quite a few times. He is a talent. He has pace and technical ability and got goals in the second half of last season.
“He is someone we had looked at, someone we had monitored over an extended period, but it was never that close. He was just a player we liked and were aware of more than anything.”
Onyekuru, 20, took the Belgian Jupiler League by storm last term, bagging 24 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions.
While he is without a goal or assist in his first four appearances for Anderlecht, that the striker is raring to show Celtic what they missed out when both sides meet next month calls for concern.
He told Celtic Quick News, “Celtic were interested in me last season, so it’s really fun to play against them now. I’ve always dreamed of playing in the Champions League.
“Last year, I was laughed at when I said that I would play in the competition this season, but I’m really looking forward to my dream coming true.”
The Champions League group stages kickoff on September 12, with Celtics hosting PSG while Anderlecht travel to Allianz Arena to clash with Bayern on matchday 1.
