Match Preview

Santos Laguna is off to a disastrous start currently sitting in 17th place with only three points, only ahead of Chivas of Guadalajara. Los Guerreros along with Chivas is the only team that is yet to win a game in this Liga MX Apertura 2017. Santos had three draws to start off the season but fell apart after that with a 3-2 loss against Veracruz in week 4 and more recently a 2-0 loss against Club Tijuana in week 5. Jose Manuel de la Torre does count with a talented side but it has been severely underperforming.

The biggest disappointment by far has been midfielder Osvaldo Martinez, who has not looked remotely similar to his form in the Clausura 2017. The absence of club captain Carlos Izquierdoz has also been a tremendous blow to Santos Laguna, having to use a makeshift defense. The team from Torreon has the squad to make the playoffs but will need to start to turn things around immediately, a win against the current champions could be a major turning point.

Chivas of Guadalajara has looked even grimmer than Santos Laguna this season, currently sitting in dead last with three points. Los Rojiblancos also have three draws and two losses against Puebla and Monterrey. Chivas’ losses have been devastating as Guadalajara suffered a 4-1 defeat against Monterrey and a 1-0 loss against arguably the worst team in the Liga MX, Puebla.

The team is missing Alan Pulido but the Mexican striker is clearly not the answer, the players have just not been performing to the standards of last season. Oddly enough the biggest disappointment on Matias Almeyda’s squad has also been in the heart of the midfield with Orbelin Pineda delivering lackluster performances throughout the campaign. Chivas need the win as badly as Santos Laguna and both teams should deliver a spectacular fight for the three points making this game one of the more enticing Liga MX match-ups this week.
