Match Preview
Necaxa currently has eight points with two wins, two draws and a loss after five weeks of play in the Apertura 2017. The two wins did come up against weaker opponents in Veracruz and Club Tijuana but the draws were solid results against Chivas and Toluca away from home. Los Rayos have not scored in two weeks now and may struggle to find a consistent goal scorer going forward in the competition.
Carlos Gonzalez and Jesus Isijara have been decent in the attack with two goals each but nobody on the team has been overly impressive offensively. The defense is a rigid unit that is tough to break down especially with the experienced goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero in between the sticks. The key to success will be that defense going up against the possession-heavy Cruz Azul and it should be a very intriguing duel.
Cruz Azul is currently undefeated in the Liga MX with nine points, two wins and three draws after five rounds of play. The latest result for La Maquina was a 2-1 win against Atlas at the Estadio Azul, with the new signings Edgar Mendez and Felipe Mora making an impact on the game.
Mendez scored his third goal of the season and Mora his second to lead the Mexico City team to victory. The off season signings have panned out for Paco Jemez and Cruz Azul, comprising a potent offense with Angel Mena. This should be a tough game for Paco Jemez’s team but it is the type of game that should be won for playoff aspirations.
