Celtic reportedly tracking 21-goals-in-58 games striker, but would have to break the bank

According to the Daily Mail, Celtic are among a host of teams that have kept tabs on Lorient forward Abdul Majeed Waris in recent months.

The £12million-rated Ghana international has been impressive for the Ligue 2 side since arriving from Trabzonspor 2 summers ago, scoring 21 goals in 58 games so far.

Waris’ form and versatility have also attracted the likes of Brighton, Burnley, Fulham, West Ham and West Bromwich Albion.

Landing the Ghanaian would mean Celtic must be willing to break their current club record, which stands at £6million to do so.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is in dire need of attacking reinforcements as a result of injuries suffered by forwards Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele.

Based on recent form, Waris isn’t likely to hold down a striking starting berth with Dembele fit, but he could be a permanent option out wide.

With Lorient relegated, it’s unlikely that they would hold on to the former Manchester City trialist.

Waris definitely can be a great cover and additional quality option for the Hoops frontline this term, but it remains to be seen if they are willing to shatter a 16-season transfer record; John Hartson’s signing from Coventry City, for a player not guaranteed a starting spot.
