Hibernian defender Steven Whittaker has revealed that he had expected to be booed during his team’s match against Rangers this past weekend. Hibs, who were promoted to the Scottish Premiership this season, claimed a surprise 3-2 victory over Pedro Caixinha’s side.
Whittaker previously played for the Gers from 2007-12 before moving to Norwich City. He opted to return to Scotland this summer and joined Hibs, the club with whom he started his professional career. The 33-year-old started the game against Rangers on the weekend and played the full 90 minutes as his side claimed three points.
He had to endure repeated boos from Rangers fans but added that it was expected saying, “It’s just the pantomime of football and the way the fans see it, but there is nothing I can do about that. I can only affect things on the park and that’s what I tried to concentrate on.
“The manager stressed it was important that we all stayed on the park. There were a few incidents that maybe got out of hand but we managed to keep 11 on the park and that helped us in the end.”
