Match Preview

Necaxa is off to a wonderful start in this transition phase under new manager Ignacio Ambriz. Los Rayos had a predictable 2-0 win against Veracruz to start the season but then had a solid 1-0 win against Club Tijuana and a 2-2 draw against Chivas away from home. A mainstay at the club Jesus Isijara and a newcomer Paraguayan striker Carlos Gonzalez have been the standouts on the team with two goals each.

The back line has also been impressive, the experienced goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero already with two clean sheets to start off the tournament. Ignacio Ambriz has a very solid team that currently has the same amount of points as first-place Lobos BUAP. Necaxa may emerge as a dark horse in this tournament and find its way into the playoff hunt. A win in this game would really solidify those chances and add pressure to other teams who are currently underperforming.

Leon is one of those teams that is currently off to a disappointing start to the new campaign. Los Esmeraldas achieved their first point of the tournament last week against Cruz Azul with an 89th-minute goal by defender Osvaldo Rodriguez that sealed the 2-2 draw. Leon seems to need a transitional phase with a dreadful Clausura 2017 tournament and a slow start to this tournament under Javier Torrente.

The Liga MX is highly competitive this season and Los Panzas Verdes do not look like a playoff candidate so far. A win here would be crucial for the team and could potentially save Javier Torrente’s job if the results start to come in. This game should be a very intense and hard-fought encounter between two teams who do not yet have a full identity in the league this season.
