Ex-Tottenham star reveals huge reason why Spurs can challenge for the title

Sportsmail columnist and ex-England international Jamie Redknapp has claimed Tottenham can be strong title challengers this season despite having yet to make new recruitments.

The one-time Tottenham midfielder feels the presence of Dele Alli in Spurs XI is a huge factor as far as their title credentials and ambitions go.

In praise of the 21-year-old, Redknapp claims he is one of the best players in the world, and that the back-to-back PFA Young Player of the Year is a main reason that Mauricio Pochettino’s side can challenge at the top once again.

In his words: “I like their starting XI. I like the balance they’ve got in their team with Dembele, Dier, and Wanyama. Then you look at Dele Alli. I’m expecting him to be brilliant again. He eclipsed Pogba last year. I think he’s one of the best players in the world right now.”

Alli, a reported Barcelona-target, was in sublime and sparkling form last term, banging in 18 goals and assisting 7 others in 37 EPL games as Tottenham finished as runners-up to Chelsea.

Alongside a starting XI that can rival any top side on the planet, there are high expectations of them this season to break the duck and win the title for the first time in almost 6 decades.

While there hasn’t been any signing made, it’s believed Everton’s Ross Barkley is a very possible summer arrival.

Spurs pay Saint James’ Park a visit on Sunday to kick off their 2017-18 EPL season against Newcastle, and having missed out on 2nd position with a 5-1 loss at the ground 2 seasons ago, they would be keen to get back at the newly promoted side and start their campaign on a high note.
