Match Preview
Bury finished 19th in League One last season and made a move to bring in former Kilmarnock manager Lee Clark. The English manager has ties to Sunderland as he played with both The Black Cats and arch-rivals Newcastle United. Bury had a delightful start in this new era under Clark, getting a 1-0 win at home against Walsall in the first matchday of League One. The team from Manchester had a busy offseason, being very active on the market.
Some of the more notable additions were the signing of Jermaine Beckford from Preston and the loan deal of Nicky Ajose from Charlton. Bury has a solid team that may compete in League One this season but should have a tough time in this game against Sunderland even with the home-field advantage at Gigg Lane.
Sunderland was by far the worse team of the 16-17 EPL season, finishing dead last in the league. The Black Cats will now fight in the Championship for a spot back in the Premier League. Sunderland will test their waters with a new manager Simon Grayson and without some key players from last season like Jermaine Defoe and Jordan Pickford.
One of the more notable signings this offseason for Simon Grayson was actually former Bury striker James Vaughan. The English striker scored 24 goals in the League One last season and it will be interesting to see if he does feature in this game against his former club. The game is set to be a thrilling, hard-fought encounter at Gigg Lane and should be one to watch in this first round of the EFL Cup.
