Reading vs Gillingham EFL Cup– Match Preview August 8, 2017

EFL Cup Match Preview

This Tuesday, August 8, 2017 (12:00 PM Pacific) Reading will host Gillingham at the Madejski Stadium for a match in the first round of the EFL Cup. Both teams have distinct objectives this season but will look to advance to the next round of this cup competition.

Reading was one of the best teams in the Championship last season, finishing third and losing the final of the playoffs against Huddersfield. Jaap Stam had a productive offseason bringing in some former Premier League players, Vito Mannone from Sunderland and Madou Barrow from Swansea.

The Royals had a disappointing 2-0 loss against QPR away from home in the first matchday of the Championship this season. But will be looking to bounce back with a win in this game to start building some momentum for the fixtures that lie ahead in the Championship.

Gillingham had a lackluster 16-17 season, finishing 20th in League One but has made a change on the bench that may influence the team this season.

Former boss Justin Edinburgh is now with Northampton and former Forest Green Rovers manager Adrian Pennock is now in charge of the League One team. This should be a complicated encounter for The Gills especially away from home but Reading’s bad form could allow Gillingham to pull off an upset.
