Everton reportedly planning to make a swoop for veteran

According to The Sun, Everton are interested in landing Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen, as boss Ronald Koeman has been tipped the 31-year-old Belgian could finally be on his way out of Camp Nou on the cheap.

Since arriving from Arsenal for £15million in 2014, Vermaelen hasn’t been able to establish himself as a first-team option for Barcelona, though this is largely down to recurring injury bouts.

The former Gunners skipper featured in pre-season after his season-long loan at Roma ended, and a move away from Spain to end his nightmare is said to be on the cards.

Koeman is keen to add a versatile backup defender to his ranks at Goodison Park, and Vermaelen, who doubles as a centre-back and left-back could be a good addition.

The Belgium international is also wanted back home by Anderlecht, but he is said to favour a return to the Premier League instead.

If able to stay fit, the FA Cup winner and one-time PFA Team of the Year player can help add steel to the Toffees rearguard with his aerial ability, leadership skills, and ability to chip in goals at the other end valuable assets.
