Everton reportedly plotting a surprise swoop for experienced player

According to reports, Everton are considering a surprise move for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen.

Vermaelen’s time at the Catalan club has been injury plagued and he even picked up a strain during a pre-season friendly at the end of last week. Nonetheless, Everton are said to be interested in the ex-Arsenal man.

It is likely that Barcelona will be looking to offload the Belgian international this summer. He has attracted the interest of West Brom and Anderlecht and may prefer another chance to play in the Premier League after leaving Arsenal in 2014.

The Toffees have been very active in the transfer market this summer, having brought in Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Wayne Rooney, Cuco Martina and Sandro Ramirez. They are also expected to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea and a new striker.

Though Everton are interested in signing Olivier Giroud from Arsenal, they may prefer a move for Sassuolo striker Diego Falcinelli should a move with the Gunners fail to materialize.
