Tottenham dealt blow as highly-rated defensive target signs new deal

It doesn’t appear that Tottenham would be making their first signing of the window anytime soon as all their transfer targets keep eluding them, the latest being Ajax centre-back and skipper Joel Veltman.

The 25-year-old Dutchman was reported to have interested the north London club, but he has now put pen to paper for a three-year contract extension with the Eredivisie giants.

Ajax made the announcement on their twitter handle, and Veltman isn’t only delighted to continue lining up for the side, but he is also honored to be chosen as the new captain after Davy Klaassen left for Everton.

The performances of the 2-time Eredivisie winner during Ajax’s splendid run to the final of the Europa League showpiece last term reportedly attracted the attentions of Tottenham.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen on adding a capable backup central defender to his ranks ahead of another tight campaign.

While Veltman would have been the perfect Spurs signing due to his ability to bring the ball from the back successfully, his tackling, intercepting and aerial presence, his new deal means he won’t be putting on a Tottenham jersey anytime soon.
