This Friday, July 21, 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific) Monarcas Morelia will host Monterrey at the Estadio Morelos for a matchup in week 1 of the Liga MX Apertura 2017. The game will officially kick off the Apertura 2017 and both teams are strong candidates to make the playoffs in this upcoming tournament.
Monarcas Morelia exceeded expectations in the Liga MX Clausura 2017, evading relegation and making the playoffs, finishing in eighth place. The team from Michoacan did not have a very busy offseason but it did manage to hold on to a few key players and add to the squad depth.
La Monarquia managed to keep its star player, Raul Ruidiaz for the Apertura 2017 and the Peruvian striker should be a fundamental piece to this team going forward. Another player that Roberto Hernandez held on to was the goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa, who should be another key piece to this team.
The most notable addition to Monarcas Morelia was Mexican striker, Angel Sepulveda, who will not be available for the match because he is representing Mexico in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Los Canarios still have a very solid side, especially going forward with players like Raul Ruidiaz, Andy Polo, Jefferson Cuero and Gaston Lezcano. Roberto Hernandez and his team will face a very tough task in Monterrey but should be able to give a good fight, especially at home.
Monterrey was one of the best teams in the Clausura 2017, finishing in second and is set to have another promising tournament in the Apertura 2017. Antonio Mohamed did have a busy offseason bringing in some exceptional talent to solidify the already stacked Monterrey squad. Some of the key players that were brought in include Juan Pablo Carrizo from Inter Milan, Jorge Benitez from Cruz Azul and Aviles Hurtado from Club Tijuana.
Neri Cardozo also ended his loan spell at Queretaro and is back with Los Rayados this season. It will be interesting to see who will play in net for Antonio Mohamed in this first game with Juan Pablo Carrizo, Alexander Dominguez and Hugo Gonzalez all on the roster and if any of the fresh signings make a difference on the pitch. The match should be a very entertaining encounter to kick off the Apertura 2017 and there is no clear winner heading into it.
