This Saturday, July 22, 2017 (5:06 PM Pacific) Leon will host Atlas at the Estadio Leon for a match up in week 1 of the Liga MX Apertura 2017. Both teams will begin a difficult season in which they are not strongly favored to reach the playoffs, yet this game will serve as a parameter to measure in what form they currently are in.
Leon had a dreadful Clausura 2017 campaign, finishing in fourteenth, out of the playoffs. Los Esmeraldas do have a very solid team but must find ways to be more clinical to start getting results. Mauro Boselli was one of the biggest downfalls of the team, the Argentine scored seven goals but was not consistent and started off very slowly. The Leon captain must have a strong start for Javier Torrente’s team to be successful in this upcoming tournament.
New additions to the team like Alvaro Ramos and Maximiliano Cerrato should help strengthen the team going forward as well. One of the key pieces that could change the outlook of the team is the defender, Ivan Piris, coming over from Monterrey. Los Panzas Verdes have a very talented squad and great leadership but this first game should prove to be a strenuous task.
Atlas surprised several people in the Clausura 2017, finishing in sixth, making the playoffs and having a very formidable performance against Chivas of Guadalajara in the playoffs. Los Rojinegros did not lose any key pieces in this offseason and even strengthened the team, most notably acquiring Milton Caraglio from Xolos of Tijuana.
One notable absence for Los Zorros will be the defender, Luis Reyes, who is currently with the Mexican national team in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Atlas still has a very competitive team and will look for the three points from the game. The game should be one of the more contested matches this weekend and provide a spectacle for the fans.
