This Saturday, July 22, 2017 (7:06 PM Pacific) Chivas of Guadalajara will host Toluca at the Estadio Chivas for a matchup in week 1 of the Liga MX Apertura 2017. Both teams are title contenders early on in this competition and should present a heavily contested clash.
Chivas of Guadalajara is, of course, the current champions of the Liga MX but have a plethora of problems that could impede the team from repeating the success from the Clausura campaign. The team has been plagued with injuries including one to its main offensive player, Alan Pulido. Other notable injuries to the squad include Juan Jose Vazquez and Oswaldo Alanis.
Along with the injuries, Chivas also has five players currently representing Mexico in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup in Jair Pereira, Hedgardo Marin, Alejandro Mayorga, Orbelin Pineda and Rodolfo Pizarro. The defense could suffer heavily in this game without Jair Pereira or Oswaldo Alanis and the team can be in for a rough start to the Apertura 2017 tournament.
Toluca finished fourth in the Liga MX Clausura 2017 and reached the semifinals of the competition in the playoffs. Los Diablos had an extremely quiet offseason, the most notable additions to the team being the Argentine defender, Santiago Garcia from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen and Mateus Goncalves coming over as a loan deal from Zacatepec. The age of this Toluca squad was one of the biggest concerns in the Clausura 2017 and could affect the team from having another extensive playoff run in this tournament.
Hernan Cristante’s side should be able to defeat this dismantled Chivas team even if they will be playing away from the Estadio Nemesio Diez. The game should still be a very hard-fought encounter but Toluca has the advantage playing with a full squad against a debilitated Chivas side.
