This Thursday, July 20, 2017 (7:30 PM Pacific) Mexico will play Honduras at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona for a quarter-final match in the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Mexico was one of the best teams in the group stages, while Honduras was lucky to sneak into the knockout stages of the competition.
Mexico had a solid performance in the group stage portion of the tournament, finishing first with seven points in Group C. El Tri started out with a dominant 3-1 win against El Salvador but then had a couple of questionable performances. Mexico had a shocking 0-0 draw against Jamaica, with very few scoring opportunities and followed that with an unconvincing 2-0 win against Curacao.
The important thing is that Mexico did achieve the results and is expected to take the title or at least reach the final of the tournament. Juan Carlos Osorio counted with five different goal scorers and a solid team performance to get to these knockout stages. Last time these two teams met, Mexico won 3-0 at home and will be playing basically in front of a home crowd in this game, which should mean another dominant performance against Honduras.
Honduras was lucky to get into the knockout stages of the tournament, finishing third in Group A with four points. Los Catrachos tied against Panama and French Guiana and lost against Costa Rica, but that draw against French Guiana became a 3-0 win after French Guiana was forced to forfeit the game for using an ineligible player.
Honduras really had a poor group stage showing, sneaking into the knockout stages and Mexico should not have a problem defeating the Central American side. Honduras does always show a gritty performance and should still be able to give a hard-fought showing, which should make for an entertaining affair.
