This Friday, July 7, 2017 (4:00 PM Pacific) French Guiana will play Canada at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey to kick off the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign. Both teams are underdogs in the tournament and in Group A and will be looking for the best start possible to the competition.
French Guiana is not a great footballing nation and is expected to finish bottom in this Group A. The Islanders do have some intriguing players on their squad like Ludovic Baal and Florent Malouda. The veteran fullback, Baal has had an extensive career in the French Ligue 1 playing with Lens and Rennes. While a decent portion of the squad does play domestically there are a few players like Baal who play in France.
One of the most interesting players on French Guiana is the 37-year-old, Florent Malouda who currently plays in India but played at top teams in the past like Lyon, Chelsea and the French national team. It will be interesting to see how the veteran forward can do at his advanced age I this Gold Cup tournament. French Guiana should not be able to win this game but the match should still be an interesting one this Friday.
Canada is the clear favorite to take the three points with a much more experienced squad for these types of competitions. The North American side will count with nine MLS players on its roster and seven players who play in Europe, including Junior Hoilett of Cardiff City and Scott Arfield of Burnley. One of the more interesting players on Canada will be the 24-year-old striker, Lucas Cavallini who plays with Uruguayan club, Penarol which is a strange destination for a Canadian player.
Cavallini is enjoying success in Uruguay having score five goals in 14 appearances and will look to be influential in this game. The absence of Cyle Larin because of a DUI scandal could be tough on Canada but they should still be able to get the three points from this encounter.
