Swansea City boss Paul Clement has said that his club’s status as a Premier League side is was what prevented them from securing the signature of Chelsea legend John Terry.

The 36-year-old Terry joined Aston Villa on Monday on a one year deal. Terry left Chelsea at the end of last season after a 22 year spell with the London giants and according to the 45-year-old Clement, he opted to join Villa in order to avoid facing off against Chelsea in the Premier League.

Clement said, “My understanding of the situation is that, with John and his relationship with Chelsea, he was going to find it difficult to be a direct competitor of them in the Premier League”.

Villa finished 13th in the Championship last season in what was a disappointing season for them. They will hope that the addition of Terry can help them to challenge for a Premier League promotion push.
