This Thursday, June 29, 2017 (5:45 PM Pacific) Racing Club will host Independiente Medellin at the Estadio Presidente Peron for a Copa Sudamericana match. The game is the first leg of a two -game series with the second game not being played until July 27 in Colombia.
Racing Club had a successful season in the Argentine Primera Division finishing fourth with 55 points and qualifying for the next edition of the Copa Libertadores. The team from Avellaneda had some spectacular players throughout the season like Gustavo Bou and Marcos Acuna. Bou has already signed with the Tijuana Xolos in the Liga MX while Acuna’s future is uncertain and it is still unclear if he will play in this game.
Acuna has been one of the more vital players on the team as the 5-foot-7 forward scored nine goals during league play this season. There is a Liga MX presence on the team with two former Santos Laguna figures on the team in head coach, Diego Cocca and midfielder, Diego “El Pulpo” Gonzalez. The game should be a contested class and the Colombian team should be a good test for Diego Cocca and his men.
Independiente Medellin also had a very successful campaign in Colombia finishing in second with 42 points in the Liga Aguila. El Rojo Paisa is currently undergoing a transitional phase as the former head coach, Luis Zulbedia, who lead Medellin to that second-place finish took a new job offer and is now in charge of Spanish La Liga side Alaves.
Juan Jose Pelaez is now in charge of the Colombian team and he does count with a talented squad, Juan Fernando Quintero being the clear standout on the team. The midfielder on loan from FC Porto scored eight goals throughout the season and was Independiente Medellin’s top scorer. The match should be a contested clash between two top teams in South America and the game should be an entertaining one.
