This Thursday, June 29, 2017 (11:00 AM Pacific) Germany will play Mexico at the Olimpiyskiy Stadion Fisht in Sochi, Russia for a semi-final match in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Both teams were among the strongest in the competition and the encounter should produce a spectacular clash.
Germany topped Group B of the competition with seven points, finishing ahead of Chile, Australia and Cameroon. The European side landed a narrow 3-2 victory against Australia to start the tournament, then tied 1-1 against Chile in a contested duel and most recently produced a convincing 3-1 victory against Cameroon. The Germans were tied for the most goals in the Confederations Cup with seven goals, Lars Stindl and Timo Werner both scored two goals each to lead the team in goals.
Germany is the favorite going into the match even without some of its best players and a young core of players led by PSG midfielder, Julian Draxler. Mexico should be a solid test for this young core of German players and the European side should not come out with an easy win.
Mexico finished second in Group B of the tournament with seven points coming in just behind Portugal on goal differential. El Tri began their Confederations Cup run with a 2-2 draw against Portugal then managed to achieve 2-1 victories over New Zealand and Russia. Mexico is not currently in outstanding form and there have been several flaws in the last few games, particularly in the game against New Zealand.
There is still speculation if Juan Carlos Osorio will continue his infamous rotations in the game but some alternate players will need to be used with some notable blows to the back line. The defense will be missing some key figures as Carlos Salcedo and Diego Reyes have both been ruled out of the game while it is still unsure if Hector Moreno will be available after some injury concerns as well.
Another devastating blow for Juan Carlos Osorio will be the captain and midfielder, Andres Guardado who received consecutive yellow cards and will not be available for this match. Players like Nestor Araujo and Luis Reyes will need to step up in the defense while Jonathan Dos Santos and Hector Herrera may have more vital roles in the midfield. There is no clear winner heading into the match and there is still a foggy idea of what players Juan Carlos Osorio may use. The match should be an entertaining one in Russia and will decide the second finalist of the competition.
