This Wednesday, June 28, 2017 (11:00 AM Pacific) Portugal will play Chile in the semifinals of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup at the Kazan Arena in Kazan, Russia. Both teams were among the strongest in the tournament and there is no clear winner heading into the encounter.
Portugal topped Group A of the competition with seven points and a goal differential of five, which landed the team first place over Mexico. The European side had an impressive group stage performance, drawing 2-2 against Mexico in the first game, beating Russia 1-0 in the second game and finally dominating New Zealand 4-0 in the last game.
Cristiano Ronaldo was easily the top player for Fernando Santos showing off his extraordinary class, emerging as Portugal’s top scorer with two goals. The Real Madrid phenom was influential in each game and should continue to make his presence shown in this game. Portugal’s defense is also going into the encounter in tremendous form coming off consecutive clean sheets.
Chile finished second in Group B of the competition with five points but only achieved one win in the group stage play. The South American side defeated Cameroon in the first game but then obtained consecutive 1-1 draws against Germany and Australia. The draw against Australia was particularly worrying as Chile could have easily lost the game if the Socceroos had taken better advantage of their scoring opportunities.
Juan Antonio Pizzi counted with four different scorers in the group stage of the competition with Alexis Sanchez, Arturo Vidal, Eduardo Vargas and Martin Rodriguez providing the goals. Chile has a solid team overall but does lack a formidable defense with an unreliable goalkeeper in Claudio Bravo that could prove to make the difference in the game. The match should be a hard-fought encounter with both teams motivated to win and advance to the final of the cup.
