Atletico Junior Reinforce Team with Former Liga MX Players

Junior vs Union La Calera

Atletico Junior had a disappointing Liga Aguila campaign this past season, finishing in 12th with 23 points and missing out on the playoffs. The team from Barranquilla is a team that is accustomed to being a consistent contender in Colombia and had made some interesting signings to try and maintain that success.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Los Rojiblancos obtained Yimmi Chara from Monterrey which was an important move that reinforced the attack. Chara had been in Mexico since 2015, playing with Monterrey and Dorados de Sinaloa. His upbeat style of play and immense pace perfectly suits Liga Aguila and he would not be the only former Liga MX player that Julio Comesana would bring into Barranquilla this offseason.

This Monday, June 26 Teofilo Gutierrez will be presented in Barranquilla as Atletico Junior’s latest signing. Gutierrez, 32, has had a decorated extensive career playing in Colombia, Argentina, Portugal Turkey and in Mexico With Cruz Azul. The Colombian international played with La Maquina in the 2012-2013 season and scored six goals in 21 appearances. Gutierrez was linked with a move back to the Liga MX but instead has joined his hometown club, Atletico Junior.

“Teo” started his career with Atletico Junior and had a very successful stint with the red and white club that landed him a move to Turkey. At 32 years old, the striker is at another stage of his career and is perhaps looking to settle down with his hometown team. Gutierrez is still a potent striker that can offer a lot to Los Tiburones and it will be interesting to see if these signings can help Atletico Junior have a successful Liga Aguila II – 2017 campaign.
