This Wednesday, June 21, 2017 (11:00 AM Pacific) Mexico will play New Zealand at the Olimpiyskiy Stadion Fisht in Sochi, Russia for a group stage match in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. Both teams are yet to win in the competition and must get the three points from the encounter.

Mexico had a solid start to its Confederations Cup campaign, drawing 2-2 to Portugal in the first match day of the competition. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez and Hector Moreno scored the goals to come away with the point from that match. El Tri was lucky not to fall in the encounter as Portugal missed several key scoring opportunities and a goal was taken away from the European side because of the new video replay technology. The midfield was among the strongest components on the Mexico team with players like Andres Guardado and Jonathan Dos Santos linking up the whole game for the Aztec side.

The defense did not have the best performance, especially with Carlos Salcedo playing out of position as a right-back. It will be surprising to see Salcedo back in the right-back slot after a mediocre performance in the first match but it will be interesting to see if Juan Carlos Osorio decides to make some changes coming up against a weak opponent in New Zealand. Mexico should be able to win this game and by a significant margin to progress in this competition.

New Zealand had a disastrous start to its Confederations Cup campaign, falling 2-0 to the hosts, Russia. The Kiwis do not have the best team and are clearly debilitated in the defense without their star player and captain, Winston Reid of West Ham United. Anthony Hudson still counts with some players who can be dangerous on the attack like Leeds United striker, Chris Wood who can be a hazard in the air and inside the penalty area. Mexico should be able to contain Wood and New Zealand but it will be intriguing to see how the Kiwis can fare against a formidable opponent. The game is set to be a mismatch that Mexico should be able to win by a comfortable margin.
