Former Middlesbrough and Crystal Palace defender Craig Harrison has claimed that Leeds United are “crazy” for allowing Gary Monk.
For much of this season, Leeds challenged for promotion under the guidance of Monk. However a late slump in form lead to the Yorkshire club finishing in seventh position on the Championship standings and narrowly missing out on a place in the promotion playoffs.
Nevertheless this was arguably one of the best seasons from the Whites since they were relegated from the Premier League in 2004.
Harrison, who currently manages Hartlepool, said that he was surprised to see Monk, who he looks up to, leave his job at Elland Road and stated that the up and coming manager should join Middlesbrough.
“Garry is fantastic,” said the 39-year-old former left-back told the Teesside Gazette.
“He’s someone I look up to. I’ve spent quite a bit of time with him over the last two or three years. I’ve done my licences with him and I’ve spoken to him numerous times. Whenever [Harrison’s former club] TNS have done well he’s dropped me a text. Similarly, I’ve done the same for him.
“I hope he does get the Boro job, speaking as an ex-Middlesbrough player. I think Garry would be excellent for any club, Leeds United are crazy [for allowing him to leave]. They should have had him tied up, he’s a top, top coach and a manager.”
Due to his impressive performances with Leeds last season, Monk will not be short of offers. Over recent weeks he has been linked with Norwich and Middlesbrough though Crystal Palace are the favorites to acquire him.
