There were few bright spots on the Chiapas team that just relegated into the second tier of Mexican soccer. Los Jaguares finished in 16th place with 19 points and were among the teams that conceded the most goals in the Liga MX with 28.
The goalkeeper Moises Muñoz was almost never at fault the times Chiapas conceded as he had to deal with a faulty defense led by a washed up, Aquivaldo Mosquera. Muñoz was one of the few bright spots on the team having a great season in la Selva leading the team to a few victories. The veteran goalkeeper made 71 saves which was the second best in the Liga MX and the best among Mexican-born goalkeepers.
The goalkeeper spot in the Liga MX is a tough spot to crack, often players spending years on the bench before receiving an opportunity to start. There are even players who have exclusively been backup goalkeepers for their entirety of their careers. Moises Muñoz has not been one of these cases as he has always been a starter and has excelled everywhere he has gone. Muñoz is 37 now but still has a lot to offer in the Liga MX. Here are three possible landing spots next season for the Mexican goalkeeper.
Puebla
Puebla is the clear option for Moises Muñoz as the Lopez Chargoy family who owns Chiapas also own Los Camoteros. The transaction would be easy and Puebla is in dire need of a goalkeeper with the meltdown Cristian Campestrini had this Clausura. The Argentine goalkeeper had been a solid goalkeeper in the Liga MX for some time but had a rough tournament and eventually lost his place in the starting 11. The backup is not much better in Fabian Villasenor and Moises Muñoz would fit perfectly in Puebla for the goalkeeping position.
Pumas UNAM
Pumas UNAM is going through a transitional phase coming off a horrible tournament and will be going into next season without Alejandro Palacios or Dario Veron. Los Felinos finished in penultimate place in the Liga MX with 18 points and had the worst defense of the competition having conceded 30 goals. A lot of these goals had to with the insecurity of the goalkeepers with neither Alejandro Palacios or Alfredo Saldivar doing anything overly impressive. Saldivar might have a decent future with the Mexico City team but he did not look like a goalkeeper for a contending team this season. Moises Muñoz would be a huge upgrade for Pumas UNAM and it will be interesting to see if Los Capitalinos consider him.
Newly Promoted Team
The final of the Ascenso MX is set between Lobos BUAP and Dorados de Sinaloa, one of the two teams will gain promotion to the Liga MX. Newly promoted teams do usually bring in some players and improving the goalkeeper spot is an important priority for new teams in the Liga MX. Both teams can do with a new goalkeeper and Moises Muñoz would be a great option for either team. The Mexican goalkeeper can still make an impact on the pitch and hopefully, a team in the Liga MX signs him for next season.
