In week 17 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Club America will host Pachuca at the Estadio Azteca this Saturday, May 6, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific). Both teams are competing for a playoff berth and should make for one of the weekend’s most entertaining encounters.
Club America seemed to have been resurging but then had an abrupt halt to its success coming from two consecutive losses. The most recent defeat for the Mexico City side was a 2-1 loss to Atlas at the Estadio Azteca in week 16 of the tournament. The loss was the first at the Azteca for Las Aguilas and showcased how the ‘capitalinos’ are far from being title contenders. Club America has not secured a playoff spot yet but a draw here would cement its place in La Liguilla. Ricardo La Volpe has had a high reliance recently on the captain, Oribe Peralta who has scored eight goals in this Clausura.
Another player that La Volpe seems to have a high reliance on is the 16-year-old midfielder, Diego Lainez who has not looked as sharp recently as he had previously. Peralta is in the running for the goal-scoring title and will look to obtain it with some goals in this match. Club America does not have a side that should be able to compete for the title but it should be able to at least make the playoffs with a favorable result from this match.
Pachuca has been one of the oddest and most inconsistent teams in the Liga MX this tournament. Los Tuzos kicked off 2017 with a huge 4-2 win over Leon but never really found a way to score after that game. Pachuca has only scored 13 goals in this competition which is the lowest in the league and have consistently struggled to score with nine shutouts on the year.
The Concachampions winners are coming off an unbelievable 2-2 draw to Cruz Azul, where a goal by the goalkeeper, Oscar Perez in stoppage time made the difference. The draw was an important one that got Los Tuzos to 21 points and a win here is necessary for Pachuca to make the playoffs. Diego Alonso does count with a solid team that already raised some silverware this year and will be motivated to get the three points from the game to make the playoffs.
