According to Sky sources, Southampton are eyeing the signing of Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson.
The Sweden international is contracted to Leeds until 2020, however should the Whites fail to win promotion to the Premier League this season, it is likely that he will consider a move away.
Jansson has been resolute in defending for Gary Monk’s side this season and along with striker Chris Wood has played a key role in his clubs promotion push. His performances even managed to earn him a place in the Championship Team of the Year for this season.
With Virgil Van Dijk set to leave the Saints during the summer after attracting the interest of top Premier League clubs, Jansson could be viewed as a possible replacement.
Should Leeds fail to win promotion, the chances of Jansson leaving will be very high. He is at a stage of his career where he will want to play in the Premier League and considering Southampton will be key to add quality defenders to their roster after the departure of Van Dijk, they may approach with a solid offer.
