In the Final of the Copa Corona MX, Chivas of Guadalajara will host Monarcas Morelia at the Estadio Chivas this Wednesday, April 19, 2017 (7:06 PM Pacific). Both teams could use some silverware this year and should be able to give an enticing encounter on Wednesday night.
Guadalajara is currently in third place in the Liga MX with 25 points but has not won in the competition in two weeks. In the Copa MX Chivas has been fantastic, recently defeating Monterrey 2-1 away from home with an alternate squad. Matias Almeyda did use some key players like Jair Pereira, Orbelin Pineda, Alan Pulido and Javier Lopez but mostly stuck with the players he had been using in this tournament.
If the Argentine manager does decide to use a similar squad it will be a very strong squad, especially against Morelia’s Copa MX squad. This is the second consecutive Copa MX final that Chivas will be in, losing in penalties to Queretaro in the Apertura 2016 edition of the cup competition. The ‘rojiblancos’ will go into the game as favorites but ‘la monarquia’ could prove to be a challenge.
Monarcas Morelia has been exceeding expectations in both the Liga MX and the Copa MX. Roberto Hernandez’s main objective is to help the Monarchs evade relegation this season. Morelia is currently in 10th place with 18 points but is just a point ahead of last place Veracruz on the relegation table. In the semifinals of the Copa MX, Morelia defeated Cruz Azul 1-0 with an 85th-minute free kick goal by Rodolfo Vilchis. Roberto Hernandez has utilized an alternate starting 11 in the Copa MX featuring players like Rodolfo Vilchis, Carlos Adrian Morales, Juan Pablo Rodriguez, Facundo Erpen and Cristian Penilla.
This side has been magnificent also taking down Xolos of Tijuana and Toluca in the playoffs. One of the most important players in this run for Monarcas Morelia has been the goalkeeper, Sebastian Sosa. The Uruguayan keeper saved three penalties against Toluca in the round of 16 then had a marvelous showing against Club Tijuana in the quarterfinals. If this final does go to penalties expect Sosa to play a huge role. The match should be one of the more intriguing and exciting encounters in Mexican soccer this week, a real must-watch.
