Talismanic Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe will reportedly turn to veganism in a bid to remain on top of his game and win a place in England’s 2018 World Cup squad.
Defoe made a successful comeback to international football last weekend, after an absence of more than three years, scoring in England’s 2-0 World Cup qualification win over minnows Lithuania.
Despite Sunderland being etched to the bottom of the Premier League table, Defoe has retained his class and bagged 14 goals this season, which convinced Gareth Southgate to hand him an international recall.
“I have a better understanding of my body now,” said Defoe. “Everyone wants to feel fresh in the game, there’s no better feeling. So I’m just making sure I’m doing the right things – cryotherapy, massage, eating the right things, trying to turn vegan.”
Should Sunderland be relegated at the end of the season, the 34-year-old will surely not be short of Premier League teams wanting his signature.
