West Ham will reportedly once again to attempt to sign Sunderland forward Jermain Defoe during the summer and could snap up the veteran for free should the Black Cats suffer relegation.

A source told The Sun, “We remain interested in Jermain after trying to sign him in January. He’s 34 but his call up for England tells you everything you need to know.

“We want to discover where he stands on the contract. We believe it’s a free if they go down. Although his wages are high it would be a good deal for us.”

The Hammers attempted to sign the former Tottenham striker during the January transfer window but saw their £6 million offer being rejected by the Black Cats, who saw the player as being too valuable to their hopes of avoiding relegation.

Despite Sunderland struggling this season, the 34 year old has been on good form, bagging 14 goals. His form was also good enough to earn him a recall to the England national team for the first time since
