In week 11 of the Liga MX Clausura 2017, Monterrey will host Atlas at the Estadio BBVA Bancomer this Saturday, March 18, 2017 (6:00 PM Pacific). Both teams are playoff contenders this tournament and should present a solid match-up this weekend.
The ‘rayados’ have had a phenomenal campaign in fourth place with 16 points and in the semifinals of the Copa MX competition. Monterrey has been one of the best offenses in Mexican football this year having 35 goals in all competitions so far, this year. Dorlan Pabon has been one of the top goalscorers in the Liga MX this Clausura with five goals. Rogelio Funes Mori has also been vital to Antonio Mohamed’s attack this tournament with eight goals in the Liga MX and Copa MX competitions, including the playoffs.
Monterrey most recently in the Copa MX defeated Puebla 3-2 and in the Liga MX defeated Queretaro 4-1. Monterrey is likely to make the playoffs this Clausura, but a win against Atlas in this match would solidify its playoff push.
Atlas has been an interesting team this Clausura, being able to perform in sixth place with 14 points. Many people are not counting the ‘zorros’ in the playoff picture, with teams like Club America and Tigres UANL currently out of the playoffs. Atlas has been able to achieve impressive results this Clausura like a 2-0 win against Tigres UANL at home and a 1-0 road win against Cruz Azul. Getting at least a point in this game would be a big step towards a playoff push for the ‘rojinegros’.
Atlas is undefeated in its last three games, having tied 1-1 against Necaxa at the Estadio Victoria in its last game. Matias Alustiza will be a key player to watch in this match, having scored consecutively in Atlas’ last two matches. The game should be a solid encounter, perhaps providing a preview of a playoff match-up.
