In the round of 16 in the Copa MX Chiapas will host Puebla at the Estadio Victor Manuel Reyna this Tuesday, March 7 2017 (5:00 PM Pacific). Both teams are fighting relegation in the Liga MX, but should bring a good match-up in this cup tie.
Chiapas finished in second place with seven points in group 5 of the tournament, just trailing in goal differential to Necaxa. Sergio Bueno’s side nearly did not make the round of 16, obtaining a big comeback win against second division side, Potros UAEM in week 6 of the competition. Chiapas was down 2-0 at halftime, but Felix Micolta scored a hat-trick in the second half which propelled the team to a 3-2 victory. It is impressive that Chiapas did advance to the round of 16 of the Copa MX as Sergio Bueno primarily used bench and backup players throughout the group stage of the tournament.
It will be interesting to see if Bueno keeps on relying on players like Christian Bermudez, Enrique Esqueda and Felix Micolta, or starts using some of his starters from the Liga MX. Either way Chiapas should present an entertaining match with quite a few goals in it.
Puebla had a successful Copa MX group stage campaign, finishing in first place of group 4 with seven points. The ‘camoteros’ string of bench and reserve players did carry the team past a tough group with Mineros de Zacatecas and Atlas. Only falling to Atlas, 2-1 at the Estadio Jalisco in week 5 of the competition. A lot of the new signings that Puebla made, still have not adapted well with the Liga MX competition and have been used consistently in this tournament. Some of the players include Pablo Caceres, Osvaldo Centurion, Federico Gonzalez, Gonzalo Ramos and Carlos Rodriguez. Argentine forward, Federico Gonzalez has perhaps been the most impressive scoring two goals in the competition.
Puebla got the best of Chiapas in an intense direct relegation match in week 7 of the tournament when the ‘camoteros’ won by an impressive score of 3-0. That game was not all that entertaining with Chiapas not providing much in the game, but this should be an entertaining match at the Estadio Victor Manuel Reyna.
